Back to school…

September has been a busy month.  It was back to school, with a whole new sea of faces and names to learn.  This, of course, means that my time to even think about Liz, Patrick and the crew shrunk tremendously.  But it also means that I return to my more “normal” schedule.  When I drive to school, I listen to movie scores.  This frees up my mind to think about where I left off writing the night before.  It gives me a chance to work out a scene.  Then once I pull onto campus, I hit the pause button in my brain and switch to teacher mode.  But once I get into my car at the end of the day, I un-pause and can continue mentally writing.

This is the first time that I “disclosed” that I also write during the introduction of myself on the first day of school.  Some students had read it.  Some had heard that I had written a few books.  The ones that had read it had questions and comments of their own.  Such as “When’s the second one coming out in paperback?!”  or “Oh my God, it’s my life!” or “I’ve told my friends and family that they have to read it!”

To answer the first question – I’m working on it.  It takes a few proofs to get the setting right on the print version.  So, if you are waiting for a hard copy of “Winter Solstice”, I haven’t forgotten about it.  It’s on my radar and in the works.

As for the second comment, every time I hear it, I smile.  To me, it means that people can relate to it.  I know it’s not literally their life.  But much of it, of Liz, it accessible and others connect to her.  That is a huge compliment and warms my heart.

The third comment makes me happy.  It means that people like it enough to tell others.  That’s awesome!  Since I’m an independent author, I need all the help I can get in spreading the word.  There’s a point in the first weeks of school during my Stats class where I teach them how to link their calculators together to get the data from someone else.  I jokingly refer it to infecting each other’s calculator.  I say this because it starts off with my calculator having the data.  One student links to my calculator, now two calculators have the data.  Now two more people can get it the data for a total of four in the room.  Those four link up to four more and in a matter of minutes the whole class of 34 have the data, instead of all 34 waiting to download from my lone calculator.  There’s many lessons that can be tied to this — spread of disease, exponential growth, etc.  But it makes a real-world point.  So, we laugh at infecting each other’s calculators and spreading our data like a disease.  But the rapid spread of things can be good or bad, depending on what it is.  Data – good.  News – good.  Disease – bad.  A good book – GREAT!

“Back to School” night was last week.  During Open House, one student came in with her mom and told me she’d finished Winter Solstice and now had to get Wintering since “it was mirroring her life!”  She made me laugh with the comments (or rather exclamations) she made about the book and certain characters.  One parent came in who had read Falling.  She shared it with her sister and cousin and told me they all loved it.  I love that it crosses age barriers.  It’s YA fiction.  But it’s YA fiction that isn’t just for young adults.   Adults can enjoy it just as much.

So, now that you’re back to school… or out of summer mode… Please tell your friends and family to read Falling, Winter Solstice and Wintering. Help me spread the word!

Meanwhile, I’ll keep writing.  I’ll finish Springing (Book #4) and get to work on Book #5.  Springing is getting closer to being completed.  I’m excited.  I hope you will be too!

PS – If you haven’t posted a review of the books, please do so!  You can post them here and/or on Amazon!

Post a review!

If you’ve taken the time to visit my website or Facebook page, I hope that means that you are enjoying the Bits and Pieces series and want to know more.  More about the book.  More about Liz.  Maybe even more about me.

Currently there are three books in the series.  #1 – Falling.  #2 – Winter Solstice.  #3 – Wintering.   It is a series, so read them in order and post a review for each! The fourth book (entitled Springing) will be out some time in 2013 and is still currently being written.  I had hoped to get it finished by the end of the summer.  However, with that being 2-3 weeks away and many things on my plate, it’s going to be a challenge to get it done before I report back to school.  (If you didn’t know, teachers report back a few days before students do.)

In the mean time, enjoy the books.  And please post a review! Reviews help them been seen by the Amazon audience at-large and can help boost its rankings.  Also, reviews that are posted here or on Facebook (and differ from Amazon – even by just rewording things) could make it on the back cover when Winter Solstice and Wintering make it to paperback.  They don’t have to be long.  Any length is deeply appreciated!

Thanks for reading and your support!

"Wintering" Book Description

It’s always a challenge for me to write the book description. It’s always one of the last things I do for it.  Yes, you can infer from that that Wintering is just about ready to be released.  Once I know it’s gone live, I’ll share the news!

Meanwhile, check out the first chapter of it on the website.  And below is the book description.

It’s the dead of winter and Liz’s first relationship ended in disaster.  Breaking up with her boyfriend had bigger consequences than she could have ever imagined.  With finals around the corner, Patrick’s stalker lurking about, and opening night rapidly approaching, Liz desperately tries to hold it together, but it’s far from easy.  Pressure is coming from all sides.  Can the crew help or will they just make things worse?  Heartbreak. Betrayal. Loss. Secrets. It’s enough to make Liz want to hibernate until spring.  Along the way, she discovers that sometimes a friendship can evolve into a relationship without realizing it.

It may be July, but WINTERING is coming soon!

I am frantically working on getting WINTERING (Book #3) ready for everyone while working on book 4.   While, I could just solely work on the final editing and such for WINTERING, I do want to keep up my habit of writing every day.  It calms me.  Besides that, once you read the third book, you’ll come knocking asking for the next installment!

In the meantime, here’s one teaser… The book cover for WINTERING.

Wintering (Book Cover)

Stay tuned.  Soon I’ll give a little snippet of WINTERING.

The adventures of Liz and Patrick…

The word “adventures” seems like their going on some swashbuckling ride across the Pacific, but I use it to describe life’s journey – its trials and tribulations.  If we don’t look at life like that, then what fun can it be?  What fun are we missing?

Anyway…

Yes, their adventures continue.  So much so, that while I’m writing book 4, I’m plagued with the same problem I’ve had since I finished book 1.  That is… I see so much going on and it’s not just from that time frame.  What do I mean by that?  The time line in the series.  So, for example, in Falling it starts off in the fall.  It’s October  (the 12th to be exact).  And by the time that book ends it’s December, just as Winter Break begins.  (Yes, I do have an exact date for that too).  Book 4 still takes place during the same school year – just later (obviously).

What sometimes makes it a challenge to write is that I “see” different points of their timeline.  And I don’t see it always in chronological order.  So, I know what happens to them at different points of their lives.  As a writer, it’s a gift and a curse.  It’s great because it gives me goals, continuity of the series, curiosity of how things got to be that way.  It’s a curse because sometimes my brain won’t let go of the scene and I have to wait until it “plays out” and write it down before I can continue with the timeline I’m writing in.  It’s kind of like “writer’s block” but not.  I’m not stuck.  It’s not that I don’t know what to write.  It’s just that I’m caught up writing/thinking of other scenes that don’t belong in the current book I’m writing.  So, while I’m officially working on book 4, I’m writing bits and pieces of future books/scenes as well.

While I’m about 85% done with book 4, it’s great to know that their adventures continue.

Celebrate!

It’s the end of the school year.  Summer is just around the corner!  What better way to celebrate than to share Falling with others?

Monday, June 4 is free download day!  Tell your friends to get the first book of the series!  See the promotions section for details!

FALLING from my head into your library…

Wow! Over 22,000 copies of Falling were downloaded during the free promotion last week.  This far exceeded my expectations!  An additional surprise was the immediate rise in Winter Solstice sales.  I couldn’t help but think, “If they’re buying Winter Solstice now, that must mean that they’ve already finished Falling – and liked it enough to get the next book.  Right?”

Copies of Falling and Winter Solstice continue to rise.  This, in turn, helps it rise in the rankings.  At one point, during the free promotion, Falling was ranked #3 on the Free Contemporary Fiction Kindle Book list and #19 on the Free 100 Kindle  list!  Amazing!

When is Wintering coming out?

Well, I’m currently working on the edits and the book cover for it.  I think I’ve finally settled on the cover art.   So, it’s definitely in progress and the goal is to get it out in July.  I hope you can wait that long!

Liz’s adventures continue…

While I’m working on getting Wintering out, I’m currently writing Book 4 (along with teaching, writing curriculum, and mentoring students).    The spring is a very crazy busy time for me with science fair (regional, state and International).  I call it “science fair season”.  Officially, as of last Friday, it’s over – and been very successful.  One thing to cross off my list.  Which means… more time to write!

If you liked Falling and Winter Solstice go and like the Facebook page (see the link on the right hand side).  You’ll be able to find out the latest on what’s going on with Book 3 and other news.

Thanks for reading!  Tell a friend — better yet, tell 10 friends!
